Our Work

Our Work

Engaging Diverse Communities
In Mental Health Research

Challenge

The Wellcome Trust identified a concerning gap in mental health research participation among young people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups. They engaged us to uncover the feelings, beliefs, and attitudes of these communities toward mental health.

Our Approach

Through in-depth conversations, we explored cultural and religious factors influencing mental health and identified challenges faced by these young people, along with common issues all youths encounter.

Key Insights

Our research revealed a spectrum of emotions related to mental health, shaped by cultural norms and beliefs. We identified barriers to participation, such as stigma and mistrust, while also highlighting motivators—like the drive for representation and the chance to improve outcomes for their communities.

Solution

We recommended a multi-faceted strategy to enhance engagement, involving tailored outreach that respects cultural sensitivities, creates safe dialogue spaces, and includes community activists in promoting mental health awareness and participation in mental health research.

Creating a More
Inclusive Service

Challenge

Slimming World acknowledged the need to engage ethnic minority audiences to tackle health inequalities and provide an inclusive service.

Our Approach

A cultural insight session revealed valuable opportunities for Slimming World to boost their social impact and attract ethnic minority membership. Following this, we conducted a comprehensive review of their business to recommend strategies for better engagement with ethnic minority communities.

Key Findings

Our review identified best practices that could be implemented nationwide, along with key priorities for both the short and long term. These insights enable Slimming World to enhance its outreach and create a more inclusive environment for diverse audiences.

Solution

By understanding and addressing the unique needs of ethnic minority communities, Slimming World can drive meaningful change and improve health outcomes, ensuring their services are accessible to all.

Connecting With South
Asian Cricket Fans

By exploring the social and cultural contexts surrounding cricket enjoyment and participation, we identified key strategies for the ECB. Our observations helped us understand the dynamics at play, allowing us to recommend targeted initiatives to motivate South Asians to engage with English cricket as fans and players.

By leveraging these insights, the ECB has the opportunity to foster a more inclusive cricket community, enriching the sport for all and enhancing engagement with South Asian audiences.

Our Approach

We took an ethnographic approach to the research, spending time with families in their homes and observing their interactions with cricket.

Key Insights

Our deep-dive insights revealed that while South Asians are fervent about cricket—especially during matches featuring their national teams—this passion does not always extend to English cricket, even among those born in the UK.

Challenge

The England Cricket Board (ECB) sought to deepen their connection with South Asian cricket fans and encourage greater involvement in English cricket, both as supporters and participants.

Engaging Diverse Communitiesfor Diabetes Awareness

Outcomes

Our insights provided a clearer understanding of attitudes and needs regarding healthy diets and activities. We developed an insight-led toolkit offering practical guidance for engaging racially diverse audiences, resulting in a comprehensive campaign to enhance awareness and participation in diabetes prevention initiatives.

Further Research Focussed On

- Awareness of the DPP and campaign assets.

- Perceived strengths and weaknesses of the campaigns.

- Motivations and barriers to using the "Know Your Risk Tool."

Purpose

To identify:

- Awareness of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

- Motivators for participation in the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP).

- Strategies for enhancing diabetes self-care.

- Effective communication methods for diabetes prevention, treatment, and care.

We also aimed to determine the best communication channels and timing for regional and national campaigns tailored to specific communities.

Sample and Methodology

We engaged 147 individuals from Black African, Black Caribbean, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian communities through:

- Horizon Scanning: Reviewing relevant reports to identify knowledge gaps.

- Qualitative Insight Research: Conducting in-depth interviews for nuanced perspectives.

- Quantitative Survey: Measuring awareness and understanding among audience segments.
